Why I shoot quietly

Quiet moment between the couple during the reception

There is a style of wedding photography built on instruction — hands here, chin down, everybody look at me. It produces clean, predictable images, and it produces very few surprises.

I work the other way round.

The ten seconds after

The frame I want is almost never the one somebody posed for. It is the ten seconds afterwards, when the group breaks up and someone says something that makes the bride laugh properly. If I am still talking, I miss it.

What that means on your day

  • I will introduce myself, then largely disappear
  • I will not use flash during the ceremony
  • I will ask for perhaps twenty minutes of your attention, once
  • The rest of the day is yours

The one exception

Family groups. Those need someone to be loud and organised, and I am happy to be that person for fifteen minutes. Send me the list a fortnight beforehand and we will get through it faster than anyone expects.

I take a limited number of weddings each season so that every couple gets my full attention. Send me your date and I will reply within two working days.
